From 1948 onwards the figures are based on "Statistisches Jahrbuch der Bundesrepublik Deutschland".
Figures in italic are estimates according to source KB, for the period 1940-1948 these data have been adjusted by the compiler.
The compiler has chosen not to create a separate file for Germany as it existed prior to 1945; the figures are based on the area of the contemporary German Empire ("Deutsches Reich").
Separate files have been made for the period 1948-1989 to state the figures of East- and West-Germany as they existed as independent countries at that time.
However, the totals per annum of those separate files of East- and West-Germany may differ from the ones shown in this table as the combined Germany.
